Asher Roth – Asleep in the Bread Aisle

Name: Asher Roth
Album: Asleep in the Bread Aisle
Style: Hip Hop & Soul

quick_description A new artist which is constantly referred to as the next Eminem has been discovered through Myspace. He was born and raised in Pennsylvania then finally moved to Atlanta to pursue a music career after selling over 250 copies of his first cd made in school in under 2 days.  He has a full studio album released now and with that and his XXL Magazine cover appereance, and hopefully my review, you will find him quite interesting!
More Info

my_reviewI started this album like all others, put it in my car and drive for weeks just playing that album without skipping. Ok I lied, once you read the individual song breakdowns then you will see that I did do some skipping, but really, not much at all! Now im sorry but I will start by saying, yes, kinda like Eminem in his delivery sometimes as well as overall sound often, but thats where the similarities stop. His music feels like there is alot more soul put into it and the topics he talks about is much more compared to an average life of school, partying, women and just having bad days every now and then. The cursing is at a minimum, atleast if you are still trying to compare him to Eminem. The music displays alot of great popping drum sounds as well as dirty and rhodes style organs with tons of sampling and soul singing. He can rap at fast speeds as well as chill you out with slower poem style lyrics on his music as well as points where they just mubble and get you doing it along. Yes, im serious, just mumbling like you think you know the lyrics but you dont and want to atleast get the melody right. I will live the brief overall album review short and let you check out individual songs for yourself, tell me what you think in the comments of this post. But this album is a great one, maybe not a classic, but atleast something that you can pop in and go through most of the album without skipping songs. I cant give any albums a 5 star rating just yet so I will go with a 3!
PS:  I find it very cool that this album was released on April 20th, 2009 (4/20!!!)

Stars: 4/5

( out of 5 stars )

Lark On My Go-Kart
What a great way to start an album, this song has some screaming grungy organ chords with some deep powerful drums and to complete it with great echoing lyrics about how cool you can be. The song is really just speaking out the normal trash talk to brag about the things you do in life just to get by. Its a great song all in all to ride down the street and bump loud.

Blunt Cruisin’
This song takes some getting used to but overall I like it now. Its Ashers try at the typical Marijuana smoking song. The chorus doesn’t do this song enough justice to push the star rating up but yet I still find myself bouncing side to side from time to time chanting it. They do a clever way of someone dropping a blunt in a vehicle while they are riding and everyone starts freaking out, not only them but the music starts going faster and they are trying to figure out where the blunt dropped!

I Love College
The first single off this album and for good reason, anyone that has ever went to college can relate to it. This song is the perfect thing to play at a house party and get everyone to start chanting the chorus as well as plenty of lyrics in each verse. They have a great part where he gets the listener to raise their drinks and start chanting things like “FRESHMAN” & “KEG STAND”! If you hear any song, you know you can listen to this one on the album unless your just totally against having fun and partying.

La Di Da
The first great song that you can feel the wind fly by while in your car and just have to smile. This song would be perfect to jam loud in a vehicle riding the drag at the beach. Got some Wah wah sounding guitars with a soul drum kit to get you singing La di da da da, La di da da da! This song can really make me swing side to side!

Be By Myself
The second single of this album is Wooooohoooo, those rhode organs just symbolize soul music and with Cee-Lo singing the chorus of this song you cant go wrong. This song is all about just being single and doing what you want. Knowing that girls want you and you just have fun with them but dont get lockdown by one. You need to feel this way? Well listen to this song and sing the chorus out loud in their face! Yeah son!

She Don’t Wanna Man
If I ever click skip track, this one is the one that I skip. I have to be in a certain mood in order to really get into this song. Its his style of a dancing against a girl song and the girl is just there to dance and go home alone, or are they? Find out at the end of the night but this song sure isn’t gonna get alot of play.

Sour Patch Kids
They really havent gotten tired of the organ sounds with these songs, here is another one. Not the best song but still the music really shows that there is soul there. His lyrics definetly bring something to the song to keep you listening to it but overall this is just another song to enjoy but doesn’t touch you enough to really tell someone that they must hear it. I dont hear you!!!! Take me away!

As I Em
Now I can relate to this song very much, when I first started rapping this is all I heard, “You sound just like Eminem!”. It gets really tiring especially when you are trying to become your own styled artist and not be just another something else. This songs beat is just eh, but the story is surely there and he tells it well with his own way of delivery. And yet again more soul in the chorus that forces you to chant it!

Lion’s Roar
Another great that I think will become the third single of the album. This song has a great african dance styled vibe with some great female lyrics. Asher really brings fire with this one by singing fast, fast enough to force himself to be good competition for Busta Rhymes which does a great job on this song as well. All I can say is, listen to it!

Bad Day
This song starts with some funny mubbling that just brings you in to his story about having bad days in your life. We can all relate to this right? Yes, you know you can, I bet you might be having a bad day right now huh?  Jazze Pha just singing his heart out in this one too! God I am loving the soul this album has, are you with me people?

His Dream
Song is confusing me a bit but you know im really not a big lyric person like I am on the vibe of the beat. This song seems to be talking about a guy talking about how his father died and he decides to pursue the same dream his father had and becomes a poet. Just songs like a slow jamming song about family and though its not rated that high, I still go through the whole song.. because man…. this album has soul!!!! Aren’t you figuring this out by now?

Fallin’
I love this sampled track with a great shuffle drum going with it that just makes you feel like your getting nastolic on life and how things used to be and what you want to do in life. You cant help but smile while listening to the song and hearing about how Asher roth grew up to be what he is right now. “Even though I couldn’t relate, I keep studying and listening and stuffing my face.. and now..”. Great album and if you havent decided yet, go pick this one up!
