Since the script for Ghostbusters 3 is currently being written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, writers of the Harold Ramis film Year One, there has been some speculation that Ramis could come on board to direct Ghostbusters 3. (Though the relative failure of Year One on both a creative and commercial level didn’t add much weight to the speculation.)

Now we know that Ivan Reitman, producer and director of both original Ghostbusters films, will direct the third as well. What story elements can we expect to see in this third chapter? He isn’t saying.

Speaking to MTV, Reitman said that Eisenberg and Stupnitsky are working on a second draft of the script now. “They have delivered a draft,” he said. “We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.”

Asked if he will direct the third film, Reitman simply said, “Yes.” We’d known he would be producing at least, but this is the first confirmation that he’ll direct.

He wouldn’t comment on recent rumors about the film. Reitman brushed off statements by Sigourney Weaver, who said that Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman character may appear in the film as a ghost. “I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said.” He offers that there are “some very cool things” in the script now.

That leaves us with the long-standing party line, as typically delivered by Dan Aykroyd, which is that the film will feature a young cadre of new Ghostbusters in addition to appearances (possibly as mentors to the young’uns) by the classic characters. One of the young ghostbusters may be Oscar, the grown son of Weaver character, and we can expect a lot of new gadgets and dimension-hopping tech. Personally, I just want some comedy that works. Everything after that will be cake.

Today, he reports, they’ve finally finished their work.

The Zelda Reorchestrated project (a.k.a. ZREO) first got started six years ago when a 14-year-old had the brilliant idea to redo all the music in the game with an orchestra. Now, 82 tracks later, the idea is real and you can listen to it yourself.

As of a month ago, we were only short a handful of songs to complete the album, however, many of the songs from Ocarina of Time were not nearly up to par with others, so we decided to go through the album, song by song, and figure out which songs needed to be remade. It started out as five, then ten, twelve. The list grew and grew till we reached a whopping 22 tracks. Today, we release those additional 22 remakes.

Frushtick rightly points out that this work is in no way protected from a take-down notice from Nintendo (though I’m sure the more clever legal minds out there could make a case for fair use). So get it while it’s hot in download form or pop over to Zelda Reorchestrated just to sample their work. Really, it’s pretty neat.

For the past 2 1/2 years now off and on I have been streaming what I guess I would call a live webshow from 337Studios.tv using Ustream for the most part. I have ventured into Justin.tv and Stickcam as well and even thought about paying for BitGravity, but I dont get any money out of doing any of the streaming so the shows have been slim on account of me deciding to do actual work for clients and not spend any time streaming any of the stuff. Most of the time it would tax my CPU which was the main computer I also produced designs and music on. Well I have recently got a netbook that can handle the streaming part as well as Apple allowing Ustream to have a native live broadcasting app on the iPhone now. So I am gonna try to go back to streaming alot more. Especially since lately I have had more musical clients as well as some fun video editing projects with DVD menus and stuff I could have been showing off but mostly what I miss is some freestyle friday and some just getting buzzed and hanging with a group of artists making stuff.

And Google’s staunch “no third party apps” stance means that no, you won’t be running Firefox on Chrome OS. Google doesn’t want other apps playing in their sandbox, it would seem.

Personally, it looks like I’ll enjoy playing with Chrome OS but I can’t see myself relying on it for day-to-day computing. I’d prefer to at least run a lightweight but fuller-featured linux distribution like xPudor Crunchbang where I have more flexibility.

I own a Dell Mini 9 and would like to see it running Google Chrome OS. But I will always need my Adobe & Digidesign products to run my business. So until it runs everything then its just a netbook OS to me. Lastly, enjoy their actual demo part of the day video where they boot this baby up supa fast! Oh yeah!

Since a long time ago making alot of calm sounding ringtones for people I decided I should just go ahead and give you guys my complete list of this months ringtone collection. People seem to like to come to the site for my ringtones so what the hell right? If you are interested in getting your own ringtones made even songs completely made like with your own saying being chanted or what not, do not be affraid to ask for something in the comments or however you guys want to contact me.

This is just a zip file that’s about 26 MB full of m4r files that you just place anywhere and drag into your iTunes and then drag or sync to your iPhone. Others that are smarter and need mp3’s for whatever phone, just open these files and convert to mp3 using your favorite audio editor tool like Audition or Sound Forge or maybe Audacity if that opens that format. Pretty simple right? Good!

Here is a quick list of just some of the songs you’ll get

Kanye West – Heartbreak Collection

311 – Random

Basket Case

Beatles Songs

Big Booty Hoes (Hump wit it!!!)

Brad Sucks

C’mon ride that Train!

System of a Down – Chop Suet

Do the Stinky Leg

Eazy E

Some Gangsta shit!

House of Pain – Jump Around

I CAN BREAK THESE CUFFS (anyone remember this?)

Kris Kros – Jump

Ice Ice Baby

Mary Jane

Me So Horny

My Dick

STP – Plush

Flobots

& MORE!!!

In one day, Beck Hansen and friends recorded an album-length cover of a beloved pop music album. They did it by setting aside time, lowering their guard, and letting creative work happen. Anyone with a side-project could learn a lot from them.

Hansen, better known as the singular Beck, is known in popular culture for a cut-and-paste, information-overloaded sound that takes a lot of time to produce, and far more time to release, promote, and tour on. For the Record Club project, he took a step back from the standard conception of “Let’s make an ‘album.’”

He rang up like-minded friends and cohorts, got them to agree on an album—the Velvet Underground’s debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico—and limited the project to 24 hours. There were no practice sessions or pre-arranged song structures, and no intention to, as Beck put it, “‘Add to’ the original work or … recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.” The result? Some pretty striking, and strikingly pretty, music. A total of eleven tracks and one alternate take, and, at the end of one really long day, there’s this new thing that anyone can listen to, watch videos of, and obsess over.

Any musician with a few musically gifted friends could try the same project, but there’s a wider lesson for programmers, writers, and hobbyists of any stripe. When you’re contemplating a new project, or stuck on a big one, consider how Record Club demonstrates the payoffs of creative constraints, definite time frames, and a ban against external expectations to your Big Serious Project.

The joys of creative constraints

Why does Flickr’s video service allow for only 90 seconds of footage? Cynically, you could assume it’s to save on bandwidth and storage costs, but Flickr says otherwise: It’s actually about emphasizing original, condensed, in-the-moment content rather than super-awesome World of Warcraft screengrabs. Spending time randomly clicking around Flickr’s video pools is scads more tolerable than randomly browsing YouTube’s user clips, which, aside from the occasional bit of brilliance, mostly serve as primers on the pitfalls of poor lighting and sound and having a huge amount of time to talk about popular music feuds.

Writer of things creative and productive Merlin Mann provides examples for, and neatly sums up, how creative constraints can paradoxically free you. In the case of so many Big Serious Projects (or BSPs, for this post’s sake), setting up a personal constraint scheme—12 songs in one day, 140 characters or less, 20 minutes of no-distraction coding before lunch every day—is simply a way to trick a big part of your brain into thinking that your BSP isn’t actually that big, or serious.

In my own case, the BSP is a blog project I’m working on (and not quite ready to link to), one aiming to create a search-able catalog of restaurants in a certain region. If I start thinking about the competition, the design demands, the future technologies I’ll have to implement (“Dear God, what if it doesn’t have static page caches?”)—it feels like something I might be able to do a little on this weekend, or maybe Monday morning, but, wait, isn’t my wife’s flight arriving then? On the other hand, If I give myself 45 minutes at a Panera to pound on the site’s design files, and only those files, I’ve actually accomplished something. The rest of the BSP is still sitting there, it hasn’t melted into a puddle because I refused to quit my day job for it, and I’m a little bit closer to knowing just how big it really is.

No-nonsense time frames

Lifehacker editor Adam Pash gave himself one year to design, code, and launch MixTape.me with almost no programming or development background. Gina Trapani launched Twitalytic after a few months of coding, knowing that it wasn’t complete, but worked, and that folks with real interest would test it out, contribute to the code, and help it get even better.

I gave myself two hours in a coffee shop—the max allowed on a Wi-Fi ticket—to put up the framework for my side blog project and write some of the first copy. It wasn’t close to finished, and had a few embarrassing glitches, but I got something done and had a handle on how I could make the site work, rather than letting the BSP sit unloved in the corner, occasionally crying out for attention and distracting me from other work.

Letting a project scale beyond what it really requires is exactly why web thinker Anil Dash thinks that Google Wave won’t become a web standard—it’s not a “weekend-sized problem”:

For a lot of web developers, long before they start integrating a new protocol or platform into their work, they hack together a rough demo over a long weekend to make sure they truly grasp how it works. And a weekend-scale implementation on a personal site usually translates roughly into a 90-day implementation cycle in a business context, which is a reasonably approachable project size.

That’s a thought that works on many levels—not the least of which is that your mind may trick you into thinking your project is a big, 90-day “corporate” thing, when it’s really something that just requires some guarded free time in the shed this weekend. Photo by Dustin DeKoekkoek.

Shutting down naysayers

The Velvet Underground & Nico is, to say the least, an album that every rock critic has thoughts on, and has already been covered many, many times over. Similarly, music webapps, Twitter tools, and food-obsessed sites have all been “done” before. All of them, though, are still legal and free to think about and work on, however, and so is your own project idea, we hope.

If you actually trick yourself into finishing your weekend project and it doesn’t change the way we live and work today, you will survive. Your boss at your day job won’t find it and fire you for aspiring to something greater than 40 hours a week of whatever they want. Assuming you haven’t abandoned your monthly bills and family to hack at your weekend project, you will have a place to sleep and people who will forgive your obsessions.

Better still, as Ira Glass puts it in this previously posted clip, your not-all-that-great stuff will eventually catch up to your tastes. This is what I’ve taken to telling myself as I find myself unable to knock down an ugly-looking rounded corner, or contemplate rebuilding an entire tag database. Keep pushing, and you’ll eventually end up withing something you yourself would want to use.

I’ve always been opposed to using online audio editing tools, because I haven’t found them to be robust or fast enough to be compelling to use. Myna just might change that, because think about how convenient it could be to start a project on one computer and pick it up some place else.Aviary is already well-established as an online image editing suite, but today the company is expanding its creative reach and bringing multi-track audio editing to the cloud.

The service, called Myna, is sort of like Garage Band in your web browser. You can import audio directly into it, record a track into the application, or use clips from one of Aviary’s provided clip libraries.

All audio effects are non-destructive and you can automate fades and pans, modify gain over time, loop, stretch and reverse audio clips and more. Once you’ve got your track just the way you want it, you can mixdown to your desktop or publish directly to your Aviary account.

The entire process takes place inside your web browser (Adobe Flash is required) and the interface is both robust and easy to use. Anyone familiar with multi-track audio apps will be familiar with Myna’s layout, and I was impressed with the speed of the app. You can playback clips before dragging them to the time line, which is really nice.

It’s probably safe to assume that most of the Grammy Award-winning readers of Engadget (hi, Evanescence!) already have expansive — and expensive — recording studios in their Bel Aire mansions. For the rest of us, however, the fruits of Avid’s acquisition of M-Audio is beginning to pay off in the form of inexpensive Pro Tools bundles that see the digital audio workstation paired with entry-level recording gear. Right now, we have three Pro Tools Essentials packages for you, including: the Pro Tools Vocal Studio USB condenser mic (includes a stand and a case for $99), the Pro Tools Recording Studio comes with a Fast Track 2-in / 2-out USB audio interface with mic / line / instrument inputs ($129), and finally Pro Tools KeyStudio 49-key MIDI keyboard (bundled with M-Audio USB Micro soundcard for $99). Of course, for prices this low you can’t expect the full-blown ProTools treatment, but even the streamlined version here should be sufficient for most would-be Johnny Marrs: 5 GB of instruments and loops, 60 virtual instrument sounds, and the usual reverb / chorus / delay / flanger / phaser / compression / EQ effects. To be released mid-September, but in the meantime check out the hardware in the gallery below.

Tonight I spent some time with Graeme Fouste, teaching him the basics of After Effects and our example I decided to make was an intro to his website/company ‘Graeme Fouste Photography‘. I decided to link it on here because well 1, its promoting his website and 2, to let you guys know how it was made. I took his logo and chopped it up in photoshop then brough that into after effects to animation it in. We decided to make it shake like crazy and put some music behind it. Once that was there, it was obvious we needed to blow some shit up, so BLAM, on went some fire and then a flash since he is a photographer. And we ended it all with a build down so now its on the net. Anyone interested in really learning the process? Go ahead and leave us a comment, thank you!

And what did our team decide to do? The forced Ben Hoover our main male anchor on the news channel I work at do some dancing. The video sets up the story of why so just watch that to find out the most of it. Overall, you know im crazy so I decided to jump in and start dancing with him. Well actually they asked me to but you know I dont turn down anything that gets my viewed by 1000’s lol. All I know is it was a fun time! Enjoy the video!
