Die Antwoord, South African Hip Hop

South African rave-rap group Die Antwoord are a lot more than they appear.
Their emergence/sudden ‘viral explosion’ onto the scene might raise a few eyebrows to those who have been following their former group, Max Normal TV. If Die Antwoord’s status quo is about being “zef as fuck” and raving to the grave, it’s a curious contrast to the Atmosphere like nature of Max Normal TV’s self aware hip hop about insecurity.

Particularly interesting is how the 3:30 mark of Max Normal’s “Total Fck Up” absolutely predicts the rise of Die Antwoord. Jokin about doing rave rap to get popular, we get a glimpse of what music looks like when “the mind is gone, but the vibe is on”.

Some ideas that suggest that these folks are making high grade performance art:

- Die Antwoord are sponsored by Puma and Jagermeister

- Dre Skull was asked to produce three tracks for Die Antwoord, none of which ended up getting used. Where did that $$ come from?

- Ninja’s “tattoos” are rumored to not be real because of their inconsistency- notice how what’s on his arm in this interview is strangely absent from this video.

-Yolandi’s tracksuit and the set design of the “Enter the Ninja” video is based on the photography of Roger Ballen, according to the credits of Max Normal’s “Total Fuck Up”. Interesting reference.

But blah, I haven’t even talked about how amazing the LOL Boys Chicago Juke remix of this track is. It’s taking me back to a rave fifteen years ago, which is impossible bec?ause I would’ve been 7 then. (Or maybe all the acid I did as a seven year old affected my memory, who knows?)

But anything that makes me laugh the first time I hear it, and then press repeat the next consecutive seventeen times is impressively crafted, especially the chopped & screwed vocal breakdown halfway through; it’s pretty clear what their influences were for this track. Be on the lookout for their new EP that’s still getting shopped around to different labels – some next generation evil pop dance music on that thing.

Streaming from my iPhone

For the past 2 1/2 years now off and on I have been streaming what I guess I would call a live webshow from 337Studios.tv using Ustream for the most part. I have ventured into Justin.tv and Stickcam as well and even thought about paying for BitGravity, but I dont get any money out of doing any of the streaming so the shows have been slim on account of me deciding to do actual work for clients and not spend any time streaming any of the stuff. Most of the time it would tax my CPU which was the main computer I also produced designs and music on. Well I have recently got a netbook that can handle the streaming part as well as Apple allowing Ustream to have a native live broadcasting app on the iPhone now. So I am gonna try to go back to streaming alot more. Especially since lately I have had more musical clients as well as some fun video editing projects with DVD menus and stuff I could have been showing off but mostly what I miss is some freestyle friday and some just getting buzzed and hanging with a group of artists making stuff.

So with all that being said, I have talked with a few previous cohosts and artists and we will start bringing back the funk. Anyway we can, lol! So just like the previous show, I have a new setup for the more mobile version. Overall if your following @Skettalee on twitter then you should be fine to see when any of the versions of the show go live and can come join us in chat or even call in when we aren’t doing the mobile version. VOD: The Muppets Bohemian Rhapsody

This morning,Â The Muppets released a high definition viral parody of Queenâ€™s classic song â€œBohemian Rhapsodyâ€œ. The video, which features over 40 Muppet characters, coincides with the release of Queenâ€™s new album. Google Chrome OS (w/ video)

So Google finally let loose withÂ a real glimpse at Chrome OS today, unveiling it at an event in Mountain View today. It’s pretty much what we’ve thought all along: a bootable browser with an affinity for web apps – especially Google’s.As you’d expect from a “browser OS,” Google pretty much admits that Chrome OS isn’t really intended for offline use. They see devices running Chrome as a compliment to the existing systems in your home or office. Local storage? That’s not really part of the big picture either. Everything you save heads straight for the cloud.

It has a few good features from MAC a few from PC and obviously Google’s spin on things with features like the notification panel and such. Check out Google’s first produced video telling you exactly why they made this thing.

And Google’s staunch “no third party apps” stance means that no, you won’t be running Firefox on Chrome OS. Google doesn’t want other apps playing in their sandbox, it would seem.

Personally, it looks like I’ll enjoy playing with Chrome OS but I can’t see myself relying on it for day-to-day computing. I’d prefer to at least run a lightweight but fuller-featured linux distribution likeÂ xPudorÂ Crunchbang where I have more flexibility.

I own a Dell Mini 9 and would like to see it running Google Chrome OS. But I will always need my Adobe & Digidesign products to run my business. So until it runs everything then its just a netbook OS to me. Lastly, enjoy their actual demo part of the day video where they boot this baby up supa fast! Oh yeah!

Graeme Fouste Photography Animation

Tonight I spent some time with Graeme Fouste, teaching him the basics of After Effects and our example I decided to make was an intro to his website/company ‘Graeme Fouste Photography‘. I decided to link it on here because well 1, its promoting his website and 2, to let you guys know how it was made. I took his logo and chopped it up in photoshop then brough that into after effects to animation it in. We decided to make it shake like crazy and put some music behind it. Once that was there, it was obvious we needed to blow some shit up, so BLAM, on went some fire and then a flash since he is a photographer. And we ended it all with a build down so now its on the net. Anyone interested in really learning the process? Go ahead and leave us a comment, thank you!

Dancing on the News!

It was a Friday night, ending off the week. And what did our team decide to do? The forced Ben Hoover our main male anchor on the news channel I work at do some dancing. The video sets up the story of why so just watch that to find out the most of it. Overall, you know im crazy so I decided to jump in and start dancing with him. Well actually they asked me to but you know I dont turn down anything that gets my viewed by 1000′s lol. All I know is it was a fun time! Enjoy the video!

StopMo is a Stopmotion and 3D short film made by five students at Supinfocom Arles in 2008. The story follows an archaeologist who â€œgives life back to an FX cinema studio that was buried under the ground,â€ resulting in a battle between a stopmotion animated King Kong and a computer animated T-Rex from Jurassic Park. There are also a few obvious references to some of our favorite films. Watch the short film after the jump.

Mario Marathon for Charity

Last year, a group of Super Mario Brotherâ€™s fanatics got together and played variations of the video game 55 hours straight for charity, raising better than $11,000 in total. This year,Mario Marathon is back, and once again the gamers are broadcasting live on Ustream, intent to complete all of the games by the end of the weekend (or however long it takes).

The event seems to be off to a good start. There are currently almost 1,000 people watching the group sit on a couch and play their way through the games, while Ustreamâ€™s integration with Twitter has lots of users chatting and using the hashtagÂ #mariomarathon. And so far, more than $4,000 has been raised forÂ Childâ€™s Play, a charity that gives games, toys, and books to sick children.

Mario Marathon has some other cool tie-ins to keep followers interested. Fans can submit artwork for inclusion on their site, and both donors and those using the #mariomarathon hashtag will be eligible for prizes that will be held throughout the marathon. You can also keep up with the gamerâ€™s progress in completing the challenge on their homepage.
