Setting up your own Sound!
Sep 25th
I see that alot of you have been adding tons and tons of drumkits and instrument samples and I decided to add this little peice of information to you guys.
Honestly I never really download any of those kits you guys upload (though I appreciate it for the members) mainly because its just too much. The biggest tip to those of you that already downloading all these kits is to STOP DOWNLOADING THEM NOW. (I might be biting my tounge saying this because a big reason why this forum has been getting bigger in the music production section is because of the resources that alot of you like to download but I still feel that some of you guys need to know this)
This is the reason for it :
A good music producer has one really good kit that they created on their own from either sampling or trading sounds to gather one resource section of what you will be using. A huge way to get popular out there is to have your own sound, you will never HAVE your own sound if you continously download and use other peoples kits and constantly change the sounds of your song. Now I know, yeah its cool to get out there and have tons of styles of music BUT, do you see Lil Jon or Master P (bad example) or especially Kanye West coming to the table with a new track that is totally different from their last? No, their music has a signature style that overall each track has the same types of vibe. Now you can say, "But Track 8 doesn’t sound like Track 2 at all on so and sos album" Well then that means your not listening to the album close enough. And all of those that really been producing beats for a good while can help out in this by saying its true that you have to have a signature sound.
Now to get back really deep into why I posted this, its cool to be downloading those kits and trying them out, but throw them away because you know that you will never be able to use them all. If you try, you will be spending more time trying to find a bass drum or a snare for a song then you will be spending actually creating your tracks.
Now what I do is to actually gather tons and tons of sounds and make sure they are in folders pertaining to what the sound is. ie : Kick Drum, Snare, Clap, Conga, HiHat etc.
Once you have them all, go through them and delete the ones that sound the closes to the same, and after that you should hopefully be left with maybe 40 kicks, 40 snares and so on. Especially if you are downloading so many kits out there its crazy. Then after you feel you have some sounds that all sound for the most part different with different feels and vibes in them and EQed differently, pick out about 5 to 10 kicks, snares and whatever else and put those in your USE NOW folder. Set a folder up with the actual sounds you will be using most of the time. Then you can go ahead and make your favorite sounds by layering some of them together. Once you have that all setup then you should have a Folder structured like this :
>Drum Samples
____>Kicks (5 files)
____>Snare (5 files)
____>HiHat (10 files)
_______>Open (5 files)
_______>Closed (5 files)
____>Clap (5 files)
____etc…..
And that should do you good. But the biggest part of this is to pick sounds together that really give you a feeling and wrap around and work with each other. Stuff that is broken down deeply so you possibly have only 2 or 3 seperate kits for when you are creating Hip Hop, R & B, Techno, Rock or whatever style you are into creating. FIND YOUR OWN STYLE AND SOUND. That will make or break you.
Good luck to all you up and coming producers out there (just like me). Its a challenge in the world to get your music heard by hundreds, just think getting it heard by millions!
On a last note, if you are a subscriber to the 337 Studios Training site then you can see in the Music Resources section of the paysite you can find a huge zip file with a directory of drum and instrument samples with over 100 of each sound that you can go through and create your own layered samples with.
